If the Heat’s one-year experiment with Greg Oden wasn’t already over, it might be now.

Oden, who attempted to resurrect his career with Miami last season, was arrested early today in suburban Indianapolis on battery charges. He allegedly punched a woman in the face.

The Heat have taken chances on players with off-court issues – such as Chris Andersen, who has been outstanding for Miami, and Michael Beasley – but might have less patience than other teams do in that regard. Oden is currently a free agent.

Oden, 26, was jailed on two preliminary counts of misdemeanor battery.

A police report says officers in Lawrence, Ind., were called to a home and found a woman on a sofa with a bloody face. Oden allegedly told officers “things got out of control” during an argument with his ex-girlfriend and he punched her in the face as others tried to hold him back.

Oden, who is listed at 7 feet and 272 pounds, was a star at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis and played a season at Ohio State before the Portland Trail Blazers made him the NBA’s top pick in the 2007 draft.

But his career has been plagued by injuries. He played 23 games for the Heat last season after having been out of the league since 2010.

He didn’t make much of an impact with Miami, playing in 23 regular-season games. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 9.2 minutes per game. He played for a few minutes in three playoff games.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
